I was born and raised in Richmond, VA. I was exposed to many types of music as a child, which has lead to my diverse taste in musical styles now. Music has always been a huge part of my life. My mother exposed me to dance, R&B, and the soulful sounds of Motown. My father was into Janis Joplin, Billy Joel, Santana, and played for the Richmond Symphony. My grandfather played guitar in a country band from Nashville and played at the Grand Ole Opry.
My first concert was in 1980, and it was Prince opening for Rick James. That show started a love for live music that continues today. The first concert I took photos at was in 1983, the David Bowie “Serious Moonlight” Tour. I took those photos with an ordinary Kodak camera, but this type of photography was something that I found exciting and I was GOOD at it…really, really good at it.
Through the 80’s and 90’s I got a lot of practice, shooting Foreigner, Billy Squier, Ratt, Adam Ant, and many others including U2’s “Unforgettable Fire” Tour. Eventually, I started shooting with a 35mm film Nikon, and now work with professional quality Nikon digital bodies and lenses.
I work a full time job, unrelated to music or photography. In the past few years I have become even more passionate about my concert photography hobby. I take photographs because I absolutely love it. After 28 years of concerts I still get excited when bands hit the stage, the lights come up, and the music starts. Being able to capture the energy and emotion at a concert and share that feeling continues to keep me motivated after all these years.
